1. Don’t talk on the phone during
school hours, tell your callers that you will call them back when you are done;
most people understand and will not take offense.
3. I like to have the older children who are working
independently sit at one end of the dining table or at their desk while I the
younger children are sitting on either side of me. For reading aloud I usually
sit on the sofa with my child. My living and dining rooms are joined which
helps me to watch what is going on with everyone.
4. I have found that my children do better if school
is well planned and fairly structured so try to keep regular school hours if at
all possible. The Camrose Academy Planners are written such that
starting in fourth grade the planner is written to the student so the student
can follow and mark off what he has done. This results in more self-directed
learning so that you can spend more time with the younger students. Some
teacher interaction is still required in the older grades, just not as much.
5. Of course you will want to keep the
television and radio turned off during school time.
6. You might want to look ahead a couple of weeks to
see what your child will be studying and make a trip to the library for some
children’s books on the subjects. You might not have time to read them but your
child may enjoy looking at them.
7. If you are having trouble getting everything done,
focus on Math, English, Spelling, Reading and Writing. These are the basics and
the rest can be done in the summer or as you get time.
