GRADE SIX

BIBLE

Your child will read the Bible in conjunction with The Victor Journey Through the Bible as he works his way through the New Testament. Memory Verses are said daily and are written into the Lesson Plans.

HISTORY

We use Hillyar's A Child's History of the World, which gives an overview of history, from creation to current times. Camrose Academy's Question and Time Line Sheets will give your child a perspective of events in history as he reads through Hillyar's book. There is a bit of commentary in the lesson plans about some of the information in the book.

LATIN

Matin Latin 2 is completed this year. If your child has not had Matin Latin 1 a version with Matin Latin 1 is included on the CD so you can print that version out instead of the one with Matin Latin 2.

BOB JONES READING 6

The best reading program we could find is from Bob Jones. The stories are varied and interesting, they reinforce godly character development. The accompanying workbook introduces the five-step method, irony, denotations, connotations, characterization, denouement, biography, malapropism in humor, episodic plot and much more. The program includes A Father's Promise, a chapter book about World War II. A wonderful poetry book Favorite Poems Old and New is used along with the Bob Jones Reading program for grades 2-6.

ABEKA'S READ & THINK SKILL SHEETS

Use of the Read & Think Skill Sheets will increase your child's speed and comprehension.

LITERATURE

A study of William Shakespeare is done using a Bard of Avon and Charles Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare. You can read these aloud with your child or have him read them silently.

The best book we could find on age appropriate Classical Mythology for a Grade 6 Child is William Russell's Classic Myths to Read Aloud. Again, you can read the stories aloud with your child or have him read them silently. I encourage you to read these aloud so you can discuss the Myths with your child.

ENGLISH

Rod & Staff English 6 thoroughly covers paragraphs in all forms, outlines, relative pronouns and clauses, verb tenses, adverb clauses nominative, prepositional phrases, letters, diagramming, report writing, rough drafts and more. You will do most Lessons orally with your child.

SPELLING

We use Spelling Workout F by Modern curriculum Press for an interesting, fun and challenging spelling program.

HANDWRITING

Bob Jones Handwriting continues to develop good writing skills and some composition. Your child will be learning about different professions and how to write in calligraphy. Handwriting is done about three times per week and takes about 15-30 minutes.

GEOGRAPHY

Using Modern Curriculum Press's Maps, Graphs and Charts; Eastern Hemisphere, Larry Troxel's Geography Songs, and Camrose Academy Geography Sheets your child will be able to name and spell the countries in the Eastern Hemisphere noting basic information like population, money, language used, major landmarks and much more.

HORIZONS MATHEMATICS

We chose the Horizons Math program for a number of reasons. The first, being that these books progress in mathematical concepts logically and clearly, and orderly. Second, they review these concepts repeatedly throughout the year so the child does not forget them, not unlike the Saxon Math that our older children were using. Third we enjoy the workbook format because it saves time for other schoolwork to be completed. Fourth, the workbooks are colorful and have great puzzles to solve. Horizons have worksheet packets available for extra practice, which we use. When talking to a representative, she told me that Horizons Math is typically one to two grades above grade level. However, our children have had little or no trouble with the material being too difficult. I recommend two books called The Princeton Review Math Smart Junior: Math You'll Understand by Marcia Lerner to review math concept in a fun, easy to understand way. We are also using Singapore Math to further explain mathematical concepts in different ways including the use of "mental math". Also, Singaporean Children outscored all other countries in the TIMMS test given by the International Evaluation for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement.

LOGIC

Critical Thinking Activities by Dale Seymour Publications covers patterns, imagery and logic.

SCIENCE

We divide science into 3 main parts: Life Science (Animals, Humans and Plants), Earth and Space, finally Chemical and Physical Sciences. We use Observing God's World and Choosing Good Health 6 by A Beka Book for a wonderful Christian view of science. I have listed all the items needed for the experiments in the appendix.

ART

Art With A Purpose, Artpac 6 teaches shading with colored pencils, drawing faces, lettering, free hand, and perspective drawing. We do art once a week. You will want to purchase a pocket folder for your child to keep his finished artwork in.

MISCELLANEOUS

A few of the items included in the index of the Lesson Plans are the following: A list of Geography Terms your child should know and a list of recommended books to read or read-aloud.

I tried to include as many objectives as possible from Diane Lopez’s Teaching Children: A Curriculum Guide to What Children Need to Know at Each Level Through Sixth Grade. You may find, therefore, little lessons here and there in the planner to include topics the books did not cover.
