BIBLE

Your child will read the Bible in conjunction with The Victor Journey Through the Bible as he works his way through the Old Testament.

Bible Memory Verses are said daily and are written into the Lesson Plans.

LATIN

Matin Latin 2 is begun this year and finished in Grade 6. Lessons take about 30 minutes; chants take 5 at the most. If your child has not had Matin Latin 1 a version with Matin Latin 1 is included on the CD so you can print that version out instead of the one with Matin Latin 2.

HISTORY

Using A Child's Story of America by Christian Liberty Press and Camrose Academy History Sheets 5, we review American History rather quickly and then slow down at the time of the Civil War.  Your child will read Great Illustrated Classics The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane while working through The Story of the Civil War Coloring Book. Also read are Immigrant Kids by Russell Freedman, The Good Fight; How World War II Was Won by Stephen E. Ambrose and the Story of Inventions which bring us to the present.

BOB JONES READING 5

The best reading program we could find is Bob Jones. The stories are varied and interesting, they reinforce godly character development. The accompanying workbook reviews context, vocabulary; main ideas; The Dewey Decimal System; irony; imagery; climax; characterization; dialect; atlas use; fact; opinion; motive; personification; setting; mood; plot subplot; conflict; alliteration; idioms; bias and much more. A wonderful poetry book Favorite Poems Old and New is used along with the Bob Jones Reading program for grades 2-6. Your child will list the stories that he reads in the time period they took place in on History Sheets in our appendix. The History Sheets are used to give your child an idea of when the stories they are reading took place in history.

ABEKA'S READ & THINK SKILL SHEETS

Use of the Skill Sheets will increase your child's speed and comprehension. In between each chapter of English we work on these.

ENGLISH

Rod & Staff English 5 thoroughly covers sentences; nouns of direct address, appositives; verb forms; regular and irregular; nominative; objective, possessive, and demonstrative pronouns; predicate adjectives; prepositional phrases; letters; diagramming; quotations; report writing and more.

SPELLING

We use Spelling Workout D by Modern curriculum Press for an interesting, fun and challenging spelling program.

HANDWRITING

Bob Jones Handwriting continues to develop good writing skills, copying and some composition. Your children will be learning about the world and various languages while learning better handwriting skills.

GEOGRAPHY

Using Modern Curriculum Press's Maps, Graphs and Charts; Western Hemisphere, Larry Troxel's Geography Songs, and Camrose Academy Geography Sheets your child will be able to name and spell the countries in the Western Hemisphere and the states in the United States of America noting basic information like population, money, language used, major landmarks and much more.

MATH

We chose the Horizons Math program for a number of reasons. The first, being that these books progress in mathematical concepts logically and clearly, and orderly. Second, they review these concepts repeatedly throughout the year so the child does not forget them not unlike the Saxon Math that our older children were using. Third we enjoy the workbook format as it saves time for other schoolwork to be completed. Fourth, the workbooks are colorful and have great puzzles to solve. Horizons have worksheet packets available for extra practice, which we use. When talking to a representative, she told me that Horizons Math is typically one to two grades above grade level. However, our children have had little or no trouble with the material being too difficult. We are also using Singapore Math to further explain mathematical concepts in different ways including the use of "mental math". Also, Singaporean Children outscored all other countries in the TIMMS test given by the International Evaluation for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement.

LOGIC

Critical Thinking Activities by Dale Seymour Publications covers patterns, imagery and logic.

SCIENCE

We divide science into 3 main parts: Life Science (Animals, Humans and Plants), Earth and Space, finally Chemical and Physical Sciences. We use Considering God's Creation and Enjoying Good Health 5 by A Beka Book for a wonderful Christian view of science. I have listed all the items needed for the experiments in the appendix in the lesson plans.

POETRY

You will read selected poems from the book Favorite Poems Old and New to your child.  This large poetry book will be read from through Grade 7.

MUSIC HISTORY

Your child will learn about the origins of The Usborne Story of Music and then he will be introduced to the lives, times and painting of some famous composers in the Meet The Great Composers. The program includes a companion CD filled with music selections that correspond with the composer being studied.

ART

Art With A Purpose, Artpac 5 covers advanced shading, paint and paint mixing, lettering, and grid work.

MISCELLANEOUS

A few of the items included in the index of the Lesson Plans are the following: A list of Geography Terms your child should know and a list of recommended books to read or read-aloud.

I tried to include as many objectives as possible from Diane Lopez’s Teaching Children: A Curriculum Guide to What Children Need to Know at Each Level Through Sixth Grade. You may find, therefore, little lessons here and there in the planner to include topics the books did not cover.
