BIBLE & ANCIENT HISTORY

You will read The Child's Story Bible  to your child,  focusing on the New Testament time period, the time in which Jesus lived. A review of The Usborne Time Traveler; Rome and Romans is added to bring this time in history to life. By integrating the Bible with history, your child will realize that the stories in the Bible actually happened in history and God has been working in history since creation.

Memory Verses are said daily and are written into the Lesson Plans.

HISTORY

We are using the second in the series of books by Susan Wise Bauer, The Story of the World History For The Classical Child Volume 2: Middle Ages. We use Susan's accompanying activity book with our Camrose Academy History Sheets to help your child to make his own History Book. During this time your child will read The DK books Robin Hood, Joan of Arc and Welcome to the Globe!. The Usborne Time Traveler; Vikings and Knights and Castles will also be read. If you have not done Book 1: Ancient Times yet, we put those lesson plans in place of Book 2: Middle Ages curriculum.

LATIN

Latin 1 is introduced in third grade, half the program is introduced this year, the other half in 4th grade then Latin 2 in 5th and 6th. We are using Matin Latin 1 for 3rd.

BOB JONES READING 3

The best reading program we could find is Bob Jones. The stories are varied and interesting, they reinforce godly character development. The accompanying workbook reviews phonics, comprehension, map skills, plays, contractions, syllables, synonyms, and much more. A wonderful poetry book Favorite Poems Old and New is used along with the Bob Jones Reading program for grades 2-6. Your child will list the stories that he reads in the time period they took place in on History Sheets in the appendix. The History Sheets are used to give your child an idea of when the stories they are reading took place in history.

ABEKA'S READ & THINK SKILL SHEETS

Use of the Skill Sheets will increase your child's speed and comprehension. We begin using them on Day 151, after English is finished for the year. One sheet takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

LITERATURE

After finishing The Child's Story Bible, your child will read Pilgrim's Progress Simplified by A Beka Books. Vocabulary is introduced with each chapter along with thought provoking questions and finally one or more Bible verses that correlate with the chapter your child has read for that day. It's a great find.

Your child will read Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans. This 1895 classic by Edward Eggleston will introduce your child to the heroes and founders of our nation, and the deeds that made our nation possible.

ENGLISH

Rod & Staff English 3 thoroughly covers sentences, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, topics of paragraphs, composition, diagramming, rhyme and rhythm in poetry and more. You will do most lessons orally with your child and each lesson takes around 15 minutes.

SPELLING

We use Spelling Workout C by Modern curriculum Press for an interesting, fun and challenging spelling program.

HANDWRITING

Bob Jones Handwriting continues to develop good writing skills and some composition. The children will be learning about famous Christians and Americans throughout history as they practice their handwriting skills.

GEOGRAPHY

Learning about the world and the people living on it is fun and fascinating with National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers and Countries Of The World Sticker Activity Book. Your child will be learning basic geography terms while exploring our planet.

HORIZONS MATHEMATICS

We chose the Horizons Math program for a number of reasons. The first is because these books progress in mathematical concepts logically, clearly, and orderly. Second, they review these concepts repeatedly throughout the year so the child does not forget them, not unlike the Saxon Math that our older children were using. Third, we enjoy the workbook format since it saves time for other schoolwork to be completed. Fourth, the workbooks are colorful and have great puzzles to solve. Horizons have worksheet packets available for extra practice, which we use. When talking to a representative, she told me that Horizons Math is typically one to two grades above grade level. However, our children have had little or no trouble with the material being too difficult. We are also using Singapore Math to further explain mathematical concepts in different ways including the use of "mental math". Also, Singaporean Children outscored all other countries in the TIMMS test given by the International Evaluation for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. There are unit squares in groups of 100, 10, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 1's in the appendix. Your child can use these manipulatives to help understand his math in a more concrete manner. Another helpful item that we used with our children is Larry Troxel's Multiplication Songs cassette.

SCIENCE

We divide science into 3 main parts: Life Science (Animals, Humans and Plants); Earth and Space; finally Chemical and Physical Sciences. We use Bob Jones Science 4 for Christian Schools integrated with The Complete Book of Science Workbook Grades 3-4. This gentle approach to science shows how God's hand is truly in His creation. Scriptures are given with the text and also experiments. I have listed all the items needed for the experiments in the appendix but you are encouraged to look through the week ahead of time so you can make sure you have them. Bob Jones Science 4 integrated with The Complete Book of Science Workbook teaches about dinosaurs, animals, birds, insects, earth, moon, geology, environment, water, weather, seasons, machines, magnets, electricity and the solar system and has many fun and easy experiments to do. We also use The Great Dinosaur Mystery and the Bible to explain dinosaurs from a Biblical perspective.

POETRY

You will read selected poems from the book Favorite Poems Old and New to your child.  This large poetry book will be read from through Grade 7.

ART

Art With A Purpose, Artpac 3 covers coloring, shading with crayons, simple grid drawings and perspective drawing.

MISCELLANEOUS

I tried to include as many objectives as possible from Diane Lopez’s Teaching Children: A Curriculum Guide to What Children Need to Know at Each Level Through Sixth Grade. You may find, therefore, little lessons here and there in the planner to include topics the books did not cover.
