BIBLE & ANCIENT HISTORY

You will read The Child's Story Bible to your child, focusing on the Old Testament time period. The step-ahead readers; Tut's Mummy and The Usborne Time Traveler; Pharoahs & Pyramids are added to bring this time in history to life. By integrating the Bible with ancient history, your child will realize that the stories in the Bible actually happened in history and God has been working in history since creation. We are also beginning the series of books by Susan Wise Bauer. The first book is The Story of the World History For The Classical Child Volume 1: Ancient Times. We use Susan's accompanying activity book with our Camrose Academy History Sheets to help your child to make his own History Book.

Memory Verses are said daily and are written into the Lesson Plans.

BOB JONES READING 2

The best reading program we could find is Bob Jones Reading 2. The stories are varied, interesting and they reinforce godly character development. The accompanying workbook reviews phonics, comprehension, map skills, plays, contractions, syllables, synonyms, and much more. Reading is done on a daily basis. Your child will list the stories that he reads in the time period they took place in on History Sheets in our appendix. The History Sheets are used to show your child when the stories they are reading took place in history.

ENGLISH

Rod & Staff English 2 thoroughly covers sentences, nouns, pronouns, verbs, paragraphs, subjects, rhyming, poetry, and alphabetical order. You will do most lessons orally with your child and each lesson takes around 15 minute.

SPELLING

We use Spelling Workout B by Modern curriculum Press for an interesting, fun and challenging spelling program.

HANDWRITING

Bob Jones Handwriting is legible and easy to learn. The transition to cursive is simple. There is some composition involved in various lessons. If your child has learned a different handwriting style that you would like to continue using, go ahead and do the assignments in that style.

GEOGRAPHY

Our geography program for 2nd grade is called "Places Around the World". We use DK's My Sticker Book Atlas in conjunction with Camrose Academy's Around the World Color Sheets (in our appendix) and Wild Places by Usborne.

HORIZONS MATHEMATICS

We chose the Horizons Math program for a number of reasons. The first, being that these books progress in mathematical concepts logically and clearly, and orderly. Second, they review these concepts repeatedly throughout the year so the child does not forget them not unlike the Saxon Math that our older children were using. Third we enjoy the workbook format as it saves time for other schoolwork to be completed. Fourth, the workbooks are colorful and have great puzzles to solve. Horizons have worksheet packets available for extra practice, which we use. When talking to a representative, she told me that Horizons Math is typically one to two grades above grade level. However, our children have had little or no trouble with the material being too difficult. We are also using Singapore Math to further explain mathematical concepts in different ways including the use of "mental math". Also, Singaporean Children outscored all other countries in the TIMMS test given by the International Evaluation for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. There are unit squares in groups of 100, 10, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 in our appendix. Your child can use these manipulatives to help understand his math in a more concrete manner.

SCIENCE

We divide science into 3 main parts: Life Science (Animals, Humans and Plants), Earth and Space, finally Chemical and Physical Sciences. We use Bob Jones Science 3 for Christian Schools. This gentle approach to science shows how God's hand is truly in His creation. Scriptures are given with the text and also experiments. I have listed all the items needed for the experiments in our appendix. Bob Jones Science 3 integrated with The Complete Book of Science Workbook teaches about the human body, nutrition, animals, earth, geology, water, weather, seasons, sound, air, machines, magnets and the solar system.

POETRY

You will read selected poems from the book Favorite Poems Old and New to your child. This large poetry book will be read from through Grade 7.

ART

Art With A Purpose, Artpac 2 covers coloring skills, cutting, pasting and simple perspective drawing.

MISCELLANEOUS

Your child will listen to Wee Sing America. Many of the great American classics are on this tape and the children enjoy listening to it.

I tried to include as many objectives as possible from Diane Lopez’s Teaching Children: A Curriculum Guide to What Children Need to Know at Each Level Through Sixth Grade. You may find, therefore, little lessons here and there in the planner to include topics the books did not cover.
