Memory Verses are said daily and are written into the Lesson Plans.

6304P: Sing, Spell, Read & Write, Level 1 (Edition 2)
Sing, Spell, Read & Write, Level 1 (Edition 2)

SING, SPELL, READ & WRITE
Sing, Spell, Read & Write is one of the best phonics program we could find and our kids loved it.  This program truly takes the pain out of boring phonics. The program uses a multi-sensory approach including music, games, reading and writing.   Starting where we left off in Kindergarten, we review short vowel sound words in “The Raceway Book” and continue with step fifteen to the end of the book, thirty-sixth step.  After completing the entire program this year, your child will be reading at a third grade level.   If your child has not done Sing, Spell, Read & Write for Kindergarten then let your child complete the red book Off We Go and steps 1-14 in the blue Raceway Book.  Follow the Teacher’s Guide but skip spelling as your child will be concentrating on learning how to read and will start his spelling program in grade 2.  After completing the above he should be ready to start grade 1. If you did not use Camrose Academy for kindergarten or your child is not reading short vowel sound words then you need to print out the kindergarten Sing, Spell, Read & Write lesson pages included on the Grade 1 CD and have your child complete them.  Your child will then be ready to start the Grade 1 Raceway Book.

LITERATURE
What child doesn’t like having a book read to him?  We have found some wonderful literature books that our children love.  The Children’s Treasury of Virtues by William Bennet is a large volume of three books, The Children’s Book Of Virtues, The Children’s Book of Heroes and The Children’s Book Of America.  Arnold Loble’s Fables is a great narration book. Richard Scarry’s Please and Thank You Book makes learning manners fun.   James Herriot’s Treasury for Children includes wonderful stories of a country veterinarian and has beautiful illustrations.  We will read through the book Favorite Poems Of Childhood and the wonderful classics Winnie the Pooh and House At Pooh Corner.

GEOGRAPHY
Our geography program for 1st grade is called “People Around the World”.  We use the colorful DK book, Children Just Like Me in conjunction with Wee Sing Around the World to teach your child about the continents and the people who live on them.  This program will broaden your child’s view of the world and the people who live on it.

HISTORY
Heritage Studies 1
by Bob Jones will teach your child about maps, Columbus, Indian tribes, the first settlements, schools, trade, explorers, families and much more.  The projects are great fun.  The book North American Indians has been integrated into the history course and is very interesting and colorful.

10060: Horizons Math, Grade 1, Complete Set
Horizons Math, Grade 1, Complete Set

MATHEMATICS
We chose the Horizons Math program for a number of reasons.  The first is that these books progress in mathematical concepts logically and clearly, and orderly. Second, they review these concepts repeatedly throughout the year, so the child does not forget them, unlike the Saxon Math that our older children were using.   Third, we enjoy the workbook format since it saves time for other schoolwork to be completed. Fourth, the workbooks are colorful and have great puzzles to solve.  Horizons have worksheet packets available for extra practice, which we use.  When talking to a representative, she told me that Horizons Math is typically one to two grades above grade level.  However, our children have had little or no trouble with the material being too difficult.  We also use skip-counting tapes to help the children learn skip counting and counters to make math more concrete for the child.

We are also using Singapore Math to further explain mathematical concepts in different ways including the use of “mental math”.  Singaporean Children outscored all other countries in the TIMMS test given by the International Evaluation for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement.

BOB JONES SCIENCE 2 FOR CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS
We divide science into 3 main parts: Life Science (Animals, Humans and Plants), Earth and Space) finally Chemical and Physical Sciences.  We use Bob Jones Science 2 for Christian Schools.  This gentle approach to science shows how God’s hand is truly in His creation.  Scriptures are given with the text and also experiments.  I have listed all the items needed for the experiments in the appendix but you are encouraged to look through the week ahead of time so you can make sure you have them.  Usborne’s Complete First Book of Nature and Rod & Staff's  Nature Book to Color are also used in conjunction with Bob Jones.

ART WITH A PURPOSE 1
Art With A Purpose covers coloring, cutting, pasting, painting, drawing and craft projects.  It’s easy and fun to follow.

MISCELLANEOUS
Under the heading of Social Studies in the Daily Lesson Plans, we have the children learn and recite their name, address and phone number for safety purposes.

I tried to include as many objectives as possible from Diane Lopez’s Teaching Children: A Curriculum Guide to What Children Need to Know at Each Level Through Sixth Grade. You may find, therefore, little lessons here and there in the planner to include topics the books did not cover.
